FRESHLY ISOLATED INTESTINAL TISSUES / CELLS (ENTEROCYTES)

  • Duodenum: Location where chyme enters. Ducts from pancreas and gallbladder bring in bicarbonate to neutralize stomach acids. Pancreatic enzymes further the digestion process. Bile salts are used to break up fats. Nutrient absorption begins in lower duodenum.
  • Jejunum: Lining has enormous surface area by virtue of folds, projections (villi), and microvilli. Enzyme secretion and digestion continue here, and adsorption of products begins. Glucose and amino acids migrate to blood capillaries and fats into lymph capillaries (lacteals).
  • Ileum: Digestion is mostly completed before this point. Site of absorption of vitamin B12 and reabsorption of about 90% of conjugated bile salts. Necessary for normal blood formation.
